Christmas Light Switch-on: help needed
Honley Christmas Lights Switch-on is back! After Covid put a stop to last year’s celebrations we want to make sure 2021 is better than ever. To make sure it’s safe for everyone, we’re changing the format slightly, with Covid-safe celebrations taking place throughout the day so that people can come and go as they please.
To make it happen we need your help!
Can you spare a couple of hours?
Last time the event was held, around 70 people generously gave their time to make the Honley Christmas Lights Switch-on a huge success.
We need people to:
- Bake cakes for the event
- Set up the event from 8am
- Sell refreshments, man activities, and generally fetch and carry stuff during the event
- First aiders to be on call during the event
- Help take everything down at the end of the evening and clear up
The more people helping the lighter the work. If you can spare a couple of hours on the day, come along to our volunteers meeting at Phoenex Squash and Fitness Club on Monday 11th October at 7.30pm.
What’s involved in setting up?
Before the event, if you can bake a cake, buns, or other festive food, please let us know.
On the day, set up starts at 8am. That’s the time we all get busy building gazebos, stringing Christmas lights, cutting and laying ground cover and decorating rooms in the gazebos with our Christmas theme. We provide all the materials, which are usually donated from our generous businesses and villagers.
Then there’s the small matter of fetching and carrying chairs, tables and lots of other things from around Honley.
What’s involved in taking down?
At 8pm, it’s pretty much a case of doing everything we did in the morning but in reverse. Returning chairs and tables to their owners, taking down gazebos and clearing up rubbish.
What’s involved during the event?
There are lots of jobs to keep us all busy during the event. We need help at the children’s party, selling teas, coffees, mulled wine (even on the move!), cakes and biscuits.
Santa’s winter wonderland walkway needs manning, we’ll need litter pickers to keep the area clean and usually runners to fetch and carry whatever is needed.
First Aiders are definitely on our wish list to make sure we keep everyone at the event as safe as possible.
Whatever time you can give is welcome
Whether you can give a couple of hours, all morning or the entire day, we’d love to hear from you. The more volunteers we get the easier it is for everyone. It’s usually great fun and you’ll be doing something amazing for our village.
Come along on Monday 11th October at 7.30pm to The Phoenix Squash Club to find out more.
If you can’t make the meeting, but want to get involved, please contact June McLean: email@example.com
More about Honley Christmas Lights Switch-on
Around 3,000 people attended our last event in 2019. This year we’re hoping even more people can enjoy our Honley Christmas Lights Switch on.
To make sure it doesn’t get too crowded we’re not holding the parade this year. Instead, visitors can come and go as they please between 3pm and 8pm. In Honley Park there will be a Santa’s grotto with Christmas-themed rooms, fairground rides and more.
We’ll also have lots more going on so you can chase away the chills with a festive mulled wine, or hot chocolate. Why not grab a warming chilli and chips or a more traditional pie. And there’s always a beer or wine to add to the festive cheer.
Just head to the village on Saturday 13th November to join in the fun.
