Fun events for all the family
Autumn events in Honley:
The kids are back at school, the nights are drawing in but, whatever your age, there’s plenty to keep you active and entertained in Honley this autumn.
Here’s a taste of what’s on offer in September, October and November:
Honley Show returns to its roots for its centenary event this weekend. Held at Honley Cricket Club and Recreation Ground, it’s just £5 for adults and kids under 14 years go free when accompanied by an adult.
Browse the stalls, enjoy the dog show and marvel at the classic cars and tractors on display.
If you’re feeling energetic enter the Holmfirth Harriers 5K Multi-terrain race. There’s a junior race to tire out the kids too, if the bouncy castle hasn’t done the trick. Head to the cricket field on Saturday for a fun, family day out.
The craft market returns to Honley Park. Pop along to check out the craft stalls and more, then enjoy a relaxing cuppa at one of our village cafes.
All being well, the Christmas Light Switch On will once again return to the streets of Honley, albeit in a slightly different form. There’s no parade this year and we’re encouraging families to come and go as they please from 3-8pm. But you’ll find lots of family fun on offer, with a Santa’s Walkway, with Christmas themed rooms, plus fairground rides and more.
Warm your cockles with a mulled wine, hot chocolate and festive food. It’s a fun event for kids aged from 1 to 92!
Make a difference by volunteering
Help Honley-based charity, River Holme Connections improve the River Holme catchment by picking litter, planting trees and removing invasive species. Their work parties take place every third Saturday of the month from 10am to 12noon at different locations – find out where this week’s event is taking place.
Monday afternoons, from 1-4pm, the Friends of Green Cliff Cemetery meet to help keep this historic resting place clean and tidy. They’ve made a huge difference over the past few years transforming the overgrown cemetery into a peaceful place to visit. Join in and meet new people.
On the first Sunday of every month from 10am to 12noon, join the Friends of Honley volunteers who help to keep our village looking good. Tasks vary from litter picking to planting and painting, plus lots of other ways to help keep our village looking spick and span. Everyone is welcome to join this friendly group.
On the second Sunday of every month it’s the turn of Honley Village Community Trust. They spend their time keeping Magdale Fields and Magdale Dam looking good and clear of litter and invasive species. To join in, just head along to the burial Chapel at Greencliffe Cemetery at 10am. They finish at 12noon, no experience necessary and all equipment provided. Why not get the family involved too?
Get active with sports and fitness
We’re nearing the end of the cricket season but keep an eye on the club website for details of winter nets and other events. Outdoor cricket will return in spring and there’s a great junior section at the Honley club.
Holmfirth Badminton Club, is back in training at Honley High School every Monday evening from 7.30-10pm. It’s a friendly, social club that welcomes new members. For those who enjoy competition there’s also the opportunity to play in the Huddersfield league – but no pressure.
Whether you’re a serious runner or social jogger, Holmfirth Harriers has a group for everyone. Check out their training times today.
