A home from home in Honley
If you’re looking for a cosy cottage where you, your friends or relatives can stay then take a look at Merchant’s Cottage. Hidden away in a courtyard opposite St Mary’s Church, this century-old cottage offers a touch of modern luxury. It’s a hop, skip and a jump from Westgate, making it the perfect place to explore the village.
There are 3 bedrooms and the cottage comfortably sleeps 6 people without the need for turning the sitting room into an extra bedroom.
Merchant’s Cottage was renovated by Rachel, a former chartered accountant. While it might seem a drastic change of direction from the world of finance, Rachel admits that property renovation and interior decorating is ‘in her blood’. Her parents owned a furnishings company and Rachel worked part-time in an antiques shop while her children were young, so she has the background and understanding, not to mention a natural flair for interior design.
Rachel said: “I wanted to create a holiday home from home. Somewhere we’d like to stay as a family. That’s why I made sure there were 3 separate bedrooms, the dining table can seat 6 and there are enough sofas and comfy chairs for everyone to relax.”
Little things that make a big difference
It’s Rachel’s attention to detail that really makes the difference. Originally 2 back-to-back cottages that have been converted into one larger property by previous owners, the cottage is quirky, spacious and full of character with old beams throughout. The kitchen has flagstones with underfloor heating, while the sitting room has a wood burner for those cosy nights in.
All guests benefit from a seasonal welcome pack. Dogs are welcome too and there’s plenty of space to walk them around Honley.
Another advantage is that Rachel lives up the road, so if guests have any issues or queries, she’s on hand to sort things out.
Why stay at Merchant’s Cottage?
Apart from the obvious reason – that this is such a wonderful part of the world, why wouldn’t you stay here?!! – there are many different reasons why people book into Merchant’s Cottage.
Indeed, guests do come for the walking, cycling and generally amazing countryside around Honley. Others are visiting friends and family in the area, while some have sons and daughters studying away from home at nearby universities, including Manchester, Leeds, Sheffield and Huddersfield. Then there are those families renovating or building their own home, who need somewhere to stay while the work is completed.
