Out of School Haven for Children
For any working parent, what to do with your child before and after school can often be a worry.
Then there are the school holidays and teacher training days to consider.
Local parents, however, can find a solution at The Stables Experience in Honley, which has been taking care of little people for more than 20 years.
Children, from the age of 3 to 12, are welcomed by owner and qualified childcare specialist Malinda Moorhouse and her dedicated team.
Malinda was invited to take over the business from the previous owners 16 years ago, having set up her own childminding business at home when her two daughters were young.
Over the years, she has built a solid reputation within the local community for providing excellent out of school childcare facilities.
A Room Created for Children
The room is split into child friendly zones, providing ample opportunities for children to socialise and engage in fun activities.
Just step inside and you will see imaginations run freely. There is a pirate ship that has been crafted from carboard boxes, a role play area with outfits for younger children to dress up and different areas for children to relax and play.
There is a soft play area with climbing frame to help them burn off energy, along with air hockey, table football and a pool table.
Then there is a ‘chill-out’ area where youngsters can enjoy reading, watch television, play board games or solve jigsaw puzzles, as well as tables for homework, arts and crafts and hundreds of toys.
The technology area has touch screens for little ones and PlayStations and an Xbox for older children.
Malinda said: “It’s not structured play like in a nursery. The children get to choose what they would like to do.
“It may come as a surprise to many parents, but we find they tend to choose games over the electronics.
“Children like it because they are with other children they may know or recognise from school. Our aim is to create a safe and nurturing environment where children feel safe and happy.”
Rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted at their last inspection, staff are all DBS checked and first aid trained.
The Stables has also been awarded four stars for food hygiene. Children are invited to help plan meals for the week, with popular choices being cheese or ham toasties, chicken or beef burgers with cucumber, sweetcorn and peppers, toasted bagels and tomatoes, Yorkshire puddings with chicken and mixed veg or sausage and hash browns.
“This also helps them to think about creating nutritionally balanced meals,” said Malinda.
“Some of the older children like to help in the kitchen or by handing out the meals. Children are also encouraged to help tidy up after each session.”
As well as enjoying play before school, children can tuck into a choice of cereals, toast, muffins and pancakes, as well as fruit and yoghurt.
The Stables can often be spotted walking to and from school in a crocodile line under the safe guidance of staff.
Your Child Matters
Personal touches include a list of ‘Birthdays of the Month.’ Children attending on their birthday are presented with a birthday cake for all the children to enjoy.
A notice board for children tells them about weekly activities and meals that have been chosen by the children.
“We encourage their creative thinking and working together as a team,” said Malinda.
In the summer months, children attending the school holiday club can enjoy outdoor play in the large and enclosed carpark at the back of the building. Activities can often include swing ball, sand and water play, games, beanbags, bubble making and football on a string.
“In the holidays we tend to enjoy walks to Honley woods and to the park where we hold fun, mini sports days. Children can choose between running races, egg and spoon races, ball games and football,” said Malinda.
“Other days we bake, and children like to taste their creations with their meals.”
The Stables is registered for 40 children and has the capacity to take on children on an ad-hoc basis for any parent needing last minute childcare either before or after school, for teacher training and ‘snow days’ or for last minute childcare in the school holidays.
For any child participating in an after-school club, The Stables provides an after school pick-up service at 4:30pm.
Children also get to mark national and international celebrations, including Chinese New Year and Eid.
Malinda said: “Staff are highly qualified and experienced to ensure your child is truly cared for, that they are having fun and are in safe hands.”
