Honley DIY and Pet Supplies
How many times have you started a DIY job only to find you don’t have the right tools? Maybe you go to feed your pet and realise you are running out of food.
Fortunately for Honley folk help can be found in the heart of their village and it always comes with a warm smile and high levels of customer support.
Husband and wife team, James and Kathryn Moorhouse-O’Reilly, took over Honley’s much loved DIY and Pet Supply Ltd shop in 2021.
James, a joiner by trade, relished the opportunity of reorganising the Aladdin’s Cave of home improvements, household and garden items, not to mention a wide selection of small pet supplies.
Two years on and they have relocated to new premises in Concord Street, Honley, for improved access and more space.
Restoring the Old to New
The new premises once formed part of Kathryn’s family’s Moorhouse haulage company which still operates from the site in Honley. Before that, the building was used by the village’s Co-op shop.
It is full of Victorian features, including original tiles and tall ceilings. James has spent several months carefully renovating the property to provide better access for customers (unlike the old shop you don’t have to navigate steep Victorian steps to get in) and more space for the business to grow. Within the new shop James now has his own workshop.
For James and Kathryn no job is too small, with James being only too happy to help fix a picture frame or shelf to his customers’ walls. He has even set up his own home maintenance service to run alongside the Honley DIY shop.
“Many of our customers may need a hook fixing for a washing line, curtain poles erecting or doors rehanging after carpets have been fitted. Other tradespeople may not be interested in these smaller jobs but we provide this service,” said James. “For many of our customers the small jobs are just as important as the bigger ones and make all the difference to their everyday lives.”
Customers can order from Honley DIY and Pet Supplies in advance to collect from the shop, or opt for free delivery within the Holmfirth district, as well as to Farnley Tyas, Milnsbridge, South Crosland and Crosland Moor. Free delivery further afield is subject to a £50 minimum order.
An Aladdin’s Cave of Home Improvements and Garden Maintenance
Their shop is still very much a delightful Aladdin’s Cave. Within it you will find everything from plant and grass seed, garden maintenance, light bulbs, fixings, nails, screws, door handles and hooks to electrical and plumbing, painting and decorating, sand and cement, and ironmongery. There is a key cutting service and James can install new locks for you.
There is also a vast selection of homeware items, such as pots, pans, mops, brushes and cleaning products, as well as pest control, and a selection of stationery for work, home and school.
With James’ wealth of experience in joinery and home maintenance services he is full of professional advice which he is only too happy to share with his customers.
Kathryn said: “Ours is a traditional hardware shop but in the modern age. We now have a workshop for furniture repair so if your chair needs fixing we can do that for you.
“We love recycling. Everything in our own home is reclaimed and remade. We put the life back into your everyday household items to make them reusable.”
Pet Supplies
The couple are joined in business by their two faithful companions and much-loved dogs, German Pointer, Rambo and Spaniel cross, Rocky.
Their range in dog and cat treats is enough to suit all sizes and tastes. They also sell leads and collars and provide an identification tag engraving service.
Kathryn and James know our pets are very much part of family life and with this in mind cater for a variety of needs.
That includes food and accessories for dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, mice, hamsters, gerbils, rats and fish. Whether it’s food, toys, flea and worming treatment or straw you need, if Honley DIY and Pet Supplies doesn’t stock it they will aim to source it for you.
Nothing is too much trouble for the Honley couple. Supporting their customers’ needs is the foundation of their much-loved Honley DIY and pet supply business in the heart of the village.
