Southgate Theatre
There aren’t many villages with their own theatre and amateur dramatic society, but in Honley we have both. More than half a century ago, Southgate Theatre bought the Sunday School building from the Methodist Church, which once stood on what is now the theatre car park. Honley Players Amateur Dramatic Society moved in and in November 1966 put on their first public performance: Job for the Boy.
Since then, Southgate Theatre has been entertaining audiences from Honley, Huddersfield and beyond with plays, pantomimes, films and community events.
Home to Honley Players
Southgate Theatre is home to Honley Players Amateur Dramatic Society, who put on 3 productions each year: in February they stage the popular pantomime, followed by plays in May and autumn. Recent productions have included Blood Brothers, Wuthering Heights, Great Expectations and Blythe Spirit.
You don’t have to be a member of Honley Players to audition, or even act. Each production needs a supporting cast of set designers and decorators, lighting, music, costume designers, hair and make-up artists. If you’re interested in treading the boards or helping out backstage, keep an eye on the Southgate Theatre website and social media feeds for upcoming productions and audition dates.
Tickets are always reasonably priced and can be purchased by contacting the theatre, Kirklees Council or at selected shops in the village.
Community Theatre
Over the years, the theatre has acted as a hub for the community. As well as accommodating Honley Players there are also links with Turn Again Theatre Group in Holmfirth and the Holmfirth Film Festival. Thanks to their 4k projector and giant screen, they show popular and special interest films throughout the annual festival.
Southgate Theatre also gets involved in one-off events that bring communities together, many of which are put on free of charge. Celebrations have been planned for Peace Day and many other events. Ideas for future community events are always welcome.
Great venue for events
Did you know that you can hire Southgate theatre for your event or party? As well as the main auditorium, there are smaller rooms downstairs, which are perfect for smaller gatherings, all serviced by a fully licenced bar.

Get involved
As with many community groups, Southgate Theatre is run by a committee of volunteers. They’re always on the lookout for new people to join in or new ideas for future events, such as comedy nights, film evenings or community events.
