Sophie Seddon has joined Honley Business Association (HBA) as their new copywriter.

The former journalist and police communications officer has opened a new chapter in a story that Jeanette Dyson (former HBA copywriter) began.

Jeanette said: “It’s really reassuring to be handing the honley.info reins over to Sophie, who is so friendly and easy to talk to.

“Her writing pedigree speaks for itself so I know the website will be in safe hands. I’m really looking forward to seeing and reading what comes next.”

Sophie’s Story

Whether you’re bursting with exciting news or have something more sensitive to say, Sophie is well versed in finding just the right words and at the right time.

She has enjoyed a varied career and has written about anything and everything, from ‘run of the mill’ births, deaths and marriages to the tragic stories of people who have lost loved ones, often through particularly traumatic circumstances.

Sophie learnt very quickly that a demanding job in the media meant that one minute she could be speaking to volunteer / community groups and the next interviewing household names or leading politicians.

“I soon realised that ‘office shoes’ were just that – for the office – but if I was to succeed as a reporter in Yorkshire, I needed a spare pair of wellies in my car!” she said.

“The day a court case I was due to cover had been delayed, I was diverted to a story about award-winning pigs.

“News desk wanted ‘a nice front page pic’.

“Anyone who has ever tried to take a photo of a pig will know all too well that pigs don’t look up for anyone or anything, especially a camera.

“More interested in eating every last scrap in his pigsty, the only way to get news desk their pic, was for me to lay face down in the mud. After that, the ‘office shoes’ went in the bin!”

Sophie’s Background

Whether it’s briefing a senior police command team, speaking to bobbies on the beat, or hearing about the wonderful work of local community groups and businesses, Sophie has all the tools to spot an interesting story in the people she meets.

“Having worked as both a journalist and as a communications officer for West Yorkshire Police, I have a valuable insight into both fields,” she said. “Some call it ‘poacher turned game keeper’ but either way you look at it, I know a good story when I hear one!

“Everyone has a story to tell and I am looking forward to sharing yours.”

Spotlight on Honley

Sophie grew up in Cheshire but – to Yorkshire folk – has spent her career on the ‘right’ side of the Pennines.

After falling in love with the vibrant village of Honley, its cobbled streets, community feel and friendly people, she and her family have happily called Honley their home for the last 13 years.

Sophie said: “It’s a privilege to have been asked to support HBA.

“Jeanette has set the bar very high. She has done a fantastic job in shining the spotlight on Honley.

“I am looking forward to continuing the story Jeanette started and to meeting the people who live, work and visit here and who make Honley such a wonderful place to be.”
